Site assessments conducted and participatory community planning undertaken in 5 municipalities across 3 districts for urban EbA interventions in Kathmandu Valley

As per the approved activity plan, comprehensive site assessments and participatory community planning processes were carried out in five municipalities across three districts of the Kathmandu Valley to support the design and implementation of urban Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) interventions. These assessments involved detailed biophysical surveys, assessment of existing ecosystem services, identification of climate risks, and consultations with local governments, community forest user groups, local stakeholders, and community members to ensure that proposed interventions are context-specific, inclusive, and locally owned.

The assessment and planning work has been fully completed for the Nilbarahi Community Forest Ecosystem, focusing on forest conservation, slope stability, and enhancement of ecosystem services; Gale and Hattichowk Urban Open Space, emphasizing restoration of degraded open areas and improved stormwater management; Chyasindol Urban Open Space, with priority given to green infrastructure development and community-accessible green spaces; and the Nagadaha Urban Open Space Ecosystem, where interventions were designed to enhance wetland functions, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. Furthermore, the construction of a 10,000 cubic meter conservation pond has been successfully completed as a key climate adaptation measure to support groundwater recharge, regulate surface runoff, and provide water storage for dry periods.

The EbA interventions at Bhootkhel and Shivabatika Urban Open Spaces are currently at the final stage of implementation. These sites have undergone detailed technical assessments and community consultations, and the remaining works primarily involve finishing activities and final validation with local stakeholders. Overall, the completed and ongoing assessments have laid a strong technical and social foundation for effective implementation of urban EbA measures across the targeted municipalities, contributing to enhanced urban resilience, improved ecosystem services, and strengthened community participation in climate adaptation initiatives within the Kathmandu Valley.
